Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye 1985
Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye 1985 For Sale
Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye, 100 Proof and unchillfiltered from the Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery in Lawrenceburg. The mashbill is 38% corn, 51% Rye and 11% malted barley distilled in 1985 and bottled 2001 – denoted by the ‘A’ in the bottle number. It is actually 15 years old at the time of bottling, as opposed to 13 years suggested on the label.
Unlike the later additions of Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye this 'A' release is 100 Proof and unchillfiltered, its the same whiskey as the original Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye but not filtered. Bottled by Julian Van Winkle III at Old Commonwealth distillery in Lawrenceburg, in Julian Van Winkles words "it was about the best rye we put out". He also confirmed that this un-chillfiltered version was an experiment for the European market and noted that he believes this release does have some flavour lost in the regular chill filtered version.
The Van Winkle Rye reportedly started as a single-source whiskey, from Medley. The remaining whiskey stayed in the barrels year after year until it reached 19 years old, at which point it was tanked in stainless steel and mingled with Bernheim (Cream of Kentucky) rye. This bottle would have been 15 year old pre-tank rye with all Medley distillate. The Medley family has a long history when it comes to bourbon distillation. They’ve been a family of master distillers going back 8 generations.
Tasting notes; spicy and sweet, caramel, prune, dates and thick biscuity oak.
